When are people most motivated to organize their homes?

Are you having guests over this spring or summer? Perhaps you’re expecting people for a graduation party or a July 4th celebration? No matter the event, you’ll want to make sure there is one room in your house that is organized and clean.

The bathroom

Everyone uses it. Here are some helpful tips to get the “thrown room” ready for guests, and some tips for keeping the most used room in your home organized and free of clutter.

bathroom

Tip #1

While guests are visiting allow them access to clear bathroom surfaces. Evaluate what is currently on your bathroom counter. Is it littered with half-used product, almost empty tubes, and toiletries that won’t fit into a cabinet? Now’s the time to use up, get rid of, and find a home for what you can. Limit the number of items you leave on the counter on a daily basis, and at least while guests are visiting, store non-essential counter items out of sight.

Tip #2

A few helpful items to have within easy reach while guests are visiting are

surface wipes, a plunger, air freshener, plenty of hand soap, extra hand towels, and hand sanitizer. Check the amount and availability of these items on a regular basis.

Tip #3

Store like items together for ease of use. If all the bandaids and other first aid items are stored together in one specific spot, they’ll be located quickly and easily when needed. What if a guest needs sunscreen before jumping in the pool, or a flosser after eating corn-on-the-cob? Establishing categories, like skin care, tooth care, and others, will help you find what you want whenever you need it.

Tip #4

Use the one in, one out guideline to prevent a buildup of half-used products littering the shower caddy and bathroom counter. Get in the habit of opening one product and using it until it’s gone. We only need one toothpaste tube, shampoo bottle, and body lotion open at a time.

Tip #5

Schedule regular bathroom maintenance. Perform yearly bathroom purges to help keep order. Items to purge are expired medications and prescriptions, outdated topical skincare products, old makeup, broken bath toys, and soiled bath linens.

I hope these practical tips help keep your bathrooms organized, functional, and always guest-ready. Wishing you a spring and summer filled with fun gatherings, happy memories, and absolutely no plumbing surprises!
